    Excellent APS-C camera.

Posted by Richard on 29th Jan 2018

The Leica CL is a worthy exemplar of the Leica brand. Having moved from the Leica S to the SL (with no regrets at all), the system was still too heavy and cumbersome, both to carry a camera at most times, and for use as a travel camera. The CL fills both roles admirably. The Cl with the ultra compact 18/2.8 lens is small and light weight. A "full" travel kit, consisting of the CL with the 11-23/3.5-4.5; the 18-56/3.5-5.6; and the 55-135/2.5-4.5; covers the field (18 - 180 in 35mm terms). Compared with primes they are obviously a little slow, especially the 55-135, which gets the greatest use, but the IQ is good and ISO 800 or even 1600 does not create any problematical noise. Obviously you need the prime lenses in pursuit of bokeh. The 18mm and the 23mm are both lovely wide(ish) lenses with outstanding quality and suffciently good speed (2.8 and 2 respectively) for wide open photography. The CL and the three zooms are remarkably compact and lightweight. They all fit beautifully into the larger of an "Aneas for Leica" camera bag (there were two sizes) which were made, although only in a limited quantity, in France a year or two ago. Camera handling is good and straightforward, generally similar to the menu on the Leica S. My only small complaint is because Iike to have the auto focus point anchored mid screen. It is moved with the four arrow cursors, and I find that (unless the camera is switched off) without fail when I wake up the camera the AF point has moved to the side of the screen and it has to be relocated. It is impossible to prevent this, other than by never touching the arrow cursors at all except when taking shots, which is obviously impracticable. A future firmware might hopefully address this. Battery life is good, especially as mirrorless cameras have a reputation for using up batteries. Two batteries is ample for a day's shooting. The EVF is also good, and seems to me to be as good as that on the SL, which has such a good reputation. It's not an SL, but it's pretty close to one in every respect, and obviously in terms of convenience it far excels the SL. I find the camera, either with the full kit of zooms, or else the CL and the tiny 18mm lens, convenient and good to use. I like to have a camera with me at most times, and either combination makes this easy to do. Using the camera is enjoyable, and the results it produces are for almost all purposes equal to those from the larger kit. I highly recommend the camera.
